Journée du sport féminin

Journée du sport féminin

We women, not athletic? Nonsense! Even if feminine sport is much less mediatized than male sport and that the parity is not really respected in term of visibility, leaving us on the sideline? No way.

Why have we got "a day" ?

The French Broadcasting Authority created the international day of feminine sport which takes place this Wednesday, January 24th, voila! Organized in association with the Olympic and French National Committee, the international day of feminine sport is supported by ministries such as Sport Youth Education, Popular Clubs and societies and obviously, the Association for rights for women. A European dimension has been added to this day thanks to its collaboration with television channels such as TV5 World and RTBF. Feminine sport thus benefits from a particular kind of visibility through of reports and live competitions.

For this occasion, we decided to propose to you a small list of some of the top women athelites who inspire us and whom we admire:

Laure Manaudou

The swimmer Laure Manaudou is the first French swimmer to obtain an Olympic champion's title in 2004 thanks to her 400 meter freestyle after winning almost 100 medals and 7 world records. We are proud of our national swimming icon!

Serena Williams

The American tennis woman Serena Williams is the number one world champion. She has won up to date 33 Grand Chelem victories and four gold Olympic medals. Best friend of celebrities such as Beyonce, Kim Kardashian or Eva Longoria, this champion tends to live her life and passion discretely away from the general public.

Lindsay Vonn

Lindsey Vonn began skiing at three years old and participated in her first competition at 7 years old. Today she beats certain records ; in 2010 she became the first Olympic downhill champion and counts to her credit 78 World Cup victories. Also an influencer and founder of the Lindsey Vonn Foundation, this young woman has other assets besides her undeniable talents on the white snow flakes that cover the mountains.

Stephanie Gilemore

The sulphurous 26-year-old surfer Stephanie Gilemore has been world champion of the Foster ASP Women World Tour in 2007, whcih makes her the first surfer in the history to become a champion for participating for the first time. 7 times world champion, she gained 3 victories in the World Surf League in 2017. She is today the spokes-model of Roxy.

Carmelita Jeter

Carmelita Jeter is an American athlete specializing in sprint performances and been ten times on the podium since 2013. In 2012, this athlete established a new world record in 40 seconds 82 in the Olympic Games in London and became Olympic relay champion of 4x 100 meters. At 37 years old, the short-distance runner retired after a wound to her thigh which prevented her from participating in the selection for the Olympic Games in Rio.

Mentalities continue to evolve:

Women are gaining ground in the sport world, but stereotypes of genre are persisting. According to a study by Insee (National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies) on November 23rd, 2017, there are more women practicing a physical activity. It's time to show men that sports, in particular body-building, is not only reserved for them!

Why should we train ?

When we practice sport, we gain muscles and endurance. The advantages of training are situated not only on a physical but also on a mental level. It allows a better lung ventilation breakdown, participating in preventing arterial high blood pressure, decreases risks of certain diabetes, fights against stress, lonelyness, lack of self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Performance should not thus be the main purpose of your sports activity, even the opposite! Combining training and a balanced lifestyle with moments of indulgence and small pleasures is the key to happiness! At Les Poulettes, we are convinced that in order to feel good about ourselves, it is necessary to know how to take care of our body and mind while enjoying the good moments. What do you think ?
